Safeguarding Policy

Introduction
Umbrella Theatre Productions (UTP) is committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all children and young people aged 3-18. Our safeguarding policy aims to ensure the welfare and protection of every participant in our programs, activities, and productions. We recognize our responsibility to protect children from harm and abuse and to promote their well-being at all times.

Aims
• To ensure that all children and young people participating in UTP activities are safeguarded from harm.
• To promote the welfare of children and young people by providing clear guidelines and procedures.
• To establish a safe and nurturing environment where children can learn, grow, and enjoy the performing arts.


Scope
This policy applies to all staff, volunteers, and any other individuals working with or for UTP, including but not limited to teachers, assistants, administrators, and visiting artists.

Definitions
Child/Children: Refers to anyone under the age of 18.
Safeguarding: The action taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm.
Staff/Volunteers: Includes anyone working on behalf of UTP, paid or unpaid.


Responsibilities
Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL): The DSL is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the safeguarding policy and procedures. They will act as the main point of contact for safeguarding concerns and ensure that appropriate action is taken.

All Staff and Volunteers: Must be familiar with this safeguarding policy and procedures, attend regular training, and report any concerns about a child's welfare to the DSL.

Recruitment and Training
• All staff and volunteers will undergo a thorough recruitment process, including background checks (DBS) and reference checks.
• Staff and volunteers will receive initial safeguarding training upon appointment and refresher training annually.
• The DSL will receive advanced safeguarding training and updates as needed.


Code of Conduct
• Treat all children and young people with respect and dignity.
• Always act in the best interest of the child.
• Maintain professional boundaries and avoid situations that could be misconstrued.
• Do not engage in any form of bullying, harassment, or inappropriate behaviour.
• Report any concerns about a child's welfare or the conduct of adults immediately.
Recognising and Responding to Abuse
Abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual, and neglect. It is crucial to be aware of the signs of abuse and know how to respond.
• Signs of Abuse: Unexplained injuries, changes in behaviour, fear of certain adults, poor hygiene, and reluctance to go home.
• Responding to a Child's Disclosure:
• Listen carefully and take them seriously.
• Do not promise confidentiality; explain that you must report the concern.
• Record the disclosure accurately and immediately report it to the DSL.


Reporting Procedures
• Any concerns about a child's welfare must be reported to the DSL without delay.
• The DSL will assess the information and decide on the appropriate action, which may include contacting social services or the police.
• All reports and actions taken will be documented and stored securely.


Preventative Measures
• Ensure that all activities are risk-assessed and that health and safety guidelines are followed.
• Maintain appropriate staff-to-child ratios during activities.
• Provide children with information about keeping themselves safe, including online safety.
Confidentiality
• Information about safeguarding concerns will be shared on a need-to-know basis only.
• All records will be kept confidential and stored securely.


Monitoring and Review
• This policy will be reviewed annually by the DSL and the management team.
• Feedback from staff, volunteers, and participants will be considered in the review process.
